Common Weight Conversion Uses
Weight conversions are essential in the kitchen — US recipes use ounces and pounds while international recipes use grams and kilograms. For best baking accuracy, weighing ingredients in grams beats measuring by volume every time.
Body weight tracking often requires converting between pounds and kilograms, especially when using fitness apps or medical references that default to one system. International shipping carriers charge by kilogram, so knowing your package weight in kg is critical for estimating costs. At the gym, weight plates are labeled in either pounds or kilograms depending on the equipment manufacturer.
For specific conversions, try: KG to Pounds, Ounces to Grams, or Pounds to KG.
When to use this
Weight (or more precisely, mass) is the second most commonly converted physical quantity after length. You need it when buying produce at a European market that sells in kilograms, comparing your body weight between a US doctor (pounds) and an international form (kilograms), checking airline baggage limits, or converting recipe ingredients between ounces and grams. This converter handles milligrams, grams, kilograms, metric tons, ounces, pounds, and stone.
The most frequently searched weight conversions are kg to lbs, lbs to kg, oz to grams, and stone to pounds. Stone (14 pounds per stone) is still commonly used for body weight in the UK and Ireland. If you need just one specific pair, we have dedicated converters for kg-to-lbs, lbs-to-kg, and oz-to-grams. This tool is best when you need to convert across multiple units or uncommon pairs.
Good to know
1 kg = 2.20462 lbs is the most useful conversion to memorize. For quick mental math: double the kilograms and add 10%. So 75 kg becomes 150 + 15 = 165 lbs (actual: 165.3 lbs). This shortcut works reliably across the full range of practical weights.
The UK uses stone for body weight, which confuses everyone else. If a British person says they weigh "11 stone 4," that is 158 pounds (11 x 14 + 4) or 71.7 kg. Stone is rarely used outside body weight, and even in the UK, younger people are increasingly using kilograms.
Metric tons and imperial tons are close but not identical. A metric ton (tonne) is exactly 1,000 kg (2,204.6 lbs). A US short ton is 2,000 lbs (907.2 kg). A UK long ton is 2,240 lbs (1,016.0 kg). When someone says "a ton," always ask which one — the difference between a short ton and a metric ton is about 10%.
