When You Need This Conversion
Cooking and baking: US recipes use ounces while international recipes use grams. Converting accurately matters especially in baking, where precision affects the outcome.
Postal and shipping: USPS pricing for letters and small packages is based on ounces. International shipping uses grams and kilograms.
Precious metals: When buying gold or silver, remember that prices are quoted per troy ounce (31.1 g), not the standard ounce (28.35 g).

When to use this
You are following a European baking recipe that calls for 200 grams of butter but your kitchen scale reads in ounces. Or you are portioning food for a nutrition plan and the label lists serving size in ounces while your food tracking app wants grams. Ounce-to-gram conversion is one of the most frequent kitchen calculations, and it shows up in shipping, postal rates, and small-item manufacturing too.
One avoirdupois ounce (the standard ounce used in cooking and everyday life) equals exactly 28.349523125 grams. For quick mental math, round to 28.35 grams per ounce. Multiply the number of ounces by 28.35 and you have grams. This converter does the precise calculation for you, which matters when you are scaling recipes or calculating postage costs for lightweight packages.
Good to know
There are two kinds of ounces. The avoirdupois ounce (28.35 g) is used for food, postage, and general weight. The troy ounce (31.10 g) is used for precious metals like gold and silver. When you see "gold at $2,300 per ounce," that is a troy ounce. This converter uses the avoirdupois ounce — the one you encounter in everyday life.
Do not confuse weight ounces with fluid ounces. A fluid ounce is a volume measurement (about 29.57 mL), not a weight. An ounce of water happens to weigh close to a fluid ounce (about 29.6 grams), but an ounce of honey weighs about 42 grams despite occupying the same fluid ounce of volume. Always check whether a recipe means weight ounces or fluid ounces.
Professional bakers weigh everything in grams. Volume measurements like cups are inconsistent — a cup of flour can weigh anywhere from 120 to 160 grams depending on how you scoop it. Grams remove this variability entirely, which is why European recipes and professional kitchens use weight-based measurements almost exclusively.
