When You Need This Conversion

Body weight: 150 lbs = 68 kg, 200 lbs = 91 kg. International medical records, fitness apps, and BMI charts often use kilograms.

Gym plates: A standard 45 lb plate equals about 20.4 kg. In gyms with metric equipment, the standard plate is 20 kg (44 lbs) — close but not identical.

Airline luggage: Most airlines set a 50 lb (22.7 kg) limit for checked bags. International carriers typically advertise this as 23 kg.

When to use this

You weigh 165 pounds and a medication dosage is based on weight in kilograms. Or you are shipping a package internationally and the carrier needs the weight in kilograms. Or you have just hit a personal record on the bench press and want to tell your European training partner what you lifted in units they understand. Multiply pounds by 0.45359237 to get kilograms — or type the number here and skip the math.

This conversion is the reverse of kg-to-lbs and comes up in the same contexts: fitness, medical settings, international shipping, and travel. Most of the world uses kilograms for body weight, so if you are filling out any form outside the US — a hospital intake form, a gym membership, a visa application — you will need your weight in kilograms.

Good to know

Quick mental math: divide by 2.2. For a rough estimate, divide pounds by 2 and subtract 10% of the result. So 150 lbs becomes 75 minus 7.5 = 67.5 kg (actual: 68.0 kg). Close enough for most practical purposes.

Medical dosing uses kilograms. Drug dosages are calculated in mg per kg of body weight. Getting this conversion wrong can mean under- or over-dosing, especially in pediatric medicine where margins are tighter. This is one context where precision matters — use the full decimal, not a rough estimate.

The pound has multiple definitions historically. The pound used in the US and UK today is the avoirdupois pound (453.59237 grams). Troy pounds (used for precious metals) are lighter at 373.24 grams. When someone says "a pound of gold," they technically mean a troy pound, which is less than a pound of feathers in the avoirdupois system — a favorite trick question with a genuinely interesting answer.
