US Customary vs Metric Volume
US recipes typically use cups, tablespoons, and teaspoons for volume measurements, while metric recipes use milliliters and liters. This difference is the most common source of recipe conversion headaches.
International recipes often use weight (grams) for dry ingredients rather than volume measurements — this is significantly more accurate for baking. A cup of flour can vary by 20–30% in weight depending on how it's scooped, but 120 grams of flour is always 120 grams.

When to use this
You are buying a fish tank rated in liters but your space calculations are in gallons. Or you are scaling a cocktail recipe from fluid ounces to milliliters for a larger batch. Or you are trying to figure out how many cups are in a quart because the recipe your grandmother wrote by hand uses both. Volume conversion comes up constantly in cooking, beverages, aquariums, automotive (fuel tanks, oil capacity), cleaning supplies, and gardening.
This converter handles milliliters, liters, US gallons, quarts, pints, cups, fluid ounces, tablespoons, and teaspoons. Good to know
US and imperial volumes differ significantly. A US gallon is 3.785 liters; an imperial gallon is 4.546 liters — about 20% more. This extends to pints, cups, and fluid ounces as well. A British pint is 568 mL, while a US pint is 473 mL. When a British recipe says "a pint of milk," they mean more than an American would.
1 liter = 1,000 mL = 1,000 cubic centimeters. This elegant relationship is one of the metric system's strengths. A cube 10 cm on each side holds exactly 1 liter. And 1 liter of water weighs almost exactly 1 kilogram at standard temperature — another deliberate metric system connection.
Fluid ounces measure volume, not weight. Despite sharing the name "ounce" with the weight unit, fluid ounces measure volume. A fluid ounce of water weighs about 1.04 weight ounces. A fluid ounce of honey weighs about 1.5 weight ounces. The name overlap causes endless confusion.
