How to Convert Liters to Gallons

When You Need This Conversion

Fuel: A typical car gas tank holds 50–70 liters (13–18 US gallons). Gas prices outside the US are listed per liter, so converting to gallons helps compare costs.

Beverages: A standard 2-liter bottle equals about 0.53 gallons (roughly half a gallon).

Aquariums and pools: Tank sizes are often listed in liters internationally but gallons in the US. Pool chemical dosing instructions may reference either unit.

For all volume conversions, see our Volume Converter.

When to use this

You are renting a car in Europe and the fuel tank capacity is listed as 55 liters — how many gallons is that? Or you are comparing fuel prices between the US (per gallon) and Europe (per liter) and need a common unit to see which is actually cheaper. Liters-to-gallons conversion shows up in automotive, brewing, aquariums, pool maintenance, and anywhere else liquid volume crosses the metric-imperial boundary.

The conversion factor is 1 liter = 0.26417 US gallons, or equivalently, 1 US gallon = 3.78541 liters. Be aware that the US gallon and the imperial (UK) gallon are different — the imperial gallon is about 20% larger at 4.546 liters. This converter uses the US gallon, which is the standard in the United States.

Good to know

US gallons and imperial gallons are not the same. A US gallon is 3.785 liters; an imperial gallon is 4.546 liters. If a British recipe or car manual says "gallons," it means imperial gallons. Confusing the two can lead to meaningful errors — filling a 10-imperial-gallon tank with 10 US gallons leaves it about 17% short.

Quick estimate: roughly 4 liters per gallon. For mental math, 1 gallon is approximately 4 liters, and 1 liter is about a quarter gallon. This gets you within 5% — close enough for most practical situations like estimating how much paint to buy or how much gas you need.

Engine displacement uses liters worldwide. When a car is described as having a "2.0-liter engine," that refers to the total volume of all cylinders. A 5.0-liter V8 is about 305 cubic inches — the old American way of expressing displacement. The shift to liters for engine size is one of the few metric victories in US automotive culture.
