When You Need This Conversion

International driving: Speed limit signs outside the US are in km/h. If you see a 100 km/h sign, that's about 62 mph. GPS devices may display distance in either unit depending on region settings.

When to use this

You are planning a road trip in Canada and the GPS shows distances in kilometers, but you are used to thinking in miles. Or a running event advertises itself as a 10K and you want to know the distance in miles (6.2 miles). Or you are comparing car odometer readings between a US-spec vehicle and an import. Miles-to-kilometers conversion is one of the most common unit conversions in the world, given that only three countries — the US, Myanmar, and Liberia — still use miles as their primary road distance unit.

The exact conversion factor is 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers. For everyday use, 1.6 km per mile is close enough. To convert, multiply the number of miles by 1.609. So a 26.2-mile marathon is 42.2 km, and a 60 mph speed limit is about 97 km/h.

Good to know

The Fibonacci sequence gives surprisingly good estimates. Consecutive Fibonacci numbers (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89...) approximate the miles-to-km conversion because the ratio of consecutive Fibonacci numbers approaches the golden ratio (1.618), which is close to 1.609. So 5 miles is about 8 km, 8 miles is about 13 km, and 13 miles is about 21 km. It is a neat mathematical coincidence that actually works in practice.

Speed limits translate in predictable clusters. 30 mph is 48 km/h, 60 mph is 97 km/h, and 70 mph is 113 km/h. When driving in metric countries, remembering that 100 km/h is about 62 mph gives you a useful anchor.

A nautical mile is different from a statute mile. A nautical mile (used in aviation and maritime) is 1.852 km, while a statute mile (used on roads) is 1.609 km. Do not mix them up — the difference is about 15%.
