When You Need This Conversion

International real estate: An apartment listed at 85 m² is about 915 sq ft. Understanding the meters-to-feet relationship helps evaluate property sizes across countries.

Sports: The 100-meter sprint is 328 feet. A soccer field is 105 meters (344 feet) long. Swimming pools are 25 or 50 meters.

Building heights and diving: Elevation, building floors, and scuba diving depths are frequently given in meters internationally.

When to use this

You are reading a property listing from another country and the plot is described as 20 x 30 meters — but you visualize space in feet. Or you are watching international athletics and a long jumper just cleared 8.5 meters and you want to know what that is in feet (about 27.9 feet — an extraordinary jump). This conversion bridges the gap whenever distances described in meters need to be understood in feet.

The conversion factor is 1 meter = 3.28084 feet. Multiply meters by 3.281 for a quick result. This comes up frequently in real estate, construction, sports, mountaineering (summit elevations are often given in both units), and diving (depth in meters is standard internationally).

Good to know

Multiply by 3.3 for a quick estimate. When you do not need precision, multiplying meters by 3.3 gets you within 1% of the exact answer. A 50-meter pool is about 164 feet (exact: 164.04 feet). A 100-meter dash is about 328 feet. Close enough for conversation.

The meter was originally defined as one ten-millionth of the distance from equator to pole. French scientists measured an arc of meridian in the 1790s to establish the meter. Their measurement was slightly off, so the meter is not exactly what they intended — but the definition stuck and was later redefined in terms of the speed of light for ultimate precision.

Elevation is where this conversion appears most. Mount Everest is 8,849 meters (29,032 feet). Commercial aircraft cruise at about 10,000–12,000 meters (33,000–39,000 feet). Scuba diving limits are expressed in meters in most of the world — the recreational limit is typically 40 meters (131 feet).
