How to Convert Inches to Feet
Formula: feet = inches ÷ 12
1 foot = 12 inches exactly. So 68 inches ÷ 12 = 5 feet 8 inches (5'8").

When You Need This Conversion
Height: This is the most common use in the US. Medical records and driver's licenses list height in feet and inches, but many measurement tools give results in total inches. 68 inches = 5'8", one of the most common heights.
TV and monitor sizes: Screen sizes are given in diagonal inches. Knowing the conversion helps when comparing to room dimensions measured in feet.
Lumber and construction: Board lengths are often specified in feet, but detailed measurements use inches. Window and door openings are typically given in inches.

When to use this
You measured a room and got 156 inches, but you need the number in feet for a flooring order. Or a child's height is listed as 52 inches on a growth chart and you want to know that in feet and inches quickly. While the math is simple — divide by 12 — it gets tedious when the numbers do not divide evenly, and most people would rather not do long division in their heads for 67 inches (5 feet 7 inches).
This conversion appears constantly in home improvement, construction, and shipping. Lumber is sold in foot lengths, but detailed measurements are often taken in inches. Screen sizes, TV dimensions, and furniture measurements frequently mix the two. Having a quick converter eliminates the mental arithmetic and the risk of an off-by-one-inch mistake that could mean cutting material too short.
Good to know
12 inches per foot is exact and ancient. The 12-inch foot dates back to Roman measurement systems. Twelve was chosen because it divides evenly by 2, 3, 4, and 6, making it practical for halving, thirding, and quartering — something that base-10 systems handle less gracefully.
Height is the most common use case. In the US, height is expressed as feet and inches (5'7"), but medical records and many international contexts use total inches or centimeters. Knowing that 5'7" equals 67 inches lets you quickly enter your height on forms or convert between systems.
Remainders matter for precision. 65 inches is 5 feet 5 inches, not 5.4 feet. The decimal and fractional representations are different: 5 feet 5 inches = 5.417 feet (because 5/12 = 0.417). Be careful not to mix up "5 feet 5 inches" with "5.5 feet" — the latter is actually 5 feet 6 inches.
