How to use the New Year countdown

  1. Step 1

    Read it

    The clock counts days, hours, minutes and seconds to midnight at the start of January 1 in your time zone. Under it you will find the calendar days, weeks, sleeps and weekdays left.

  2. Step 2

    Make it yours

    Pick a theme (snow, cozy, minimal or dark) and turn on the falling snow if you like. Fullscreen makes the countdown fill the screen for a classroom, a party or a TV.

  3. Step 3

    Share or embed it

    Copy the link to send it to someone, or paste the embed code into your own page. It rolls over to next year by itself, so you never need to update it.

Ideas for classrooms, parties and planning

At a party or event

  • Put the fullscreen countdown on a TV or projector so the room can watch the last minute together.
  • Pick the dark or cozy theme for an evening event and turn on the snow for the last hour.

In the classroom

  • Use it to talk about time zones: midnight reaches the east first, so when is it midnight where your students' relatives live?
  • Count the sleeps with younger children, and the weekdays left in the term with older ones.

Planning and resolutions

  • Count the weekdays left in the year for the goals you want to finish before January.
  • Use the weeks-and-days line to schedule a monthly check-in on a resolution.

Also counting down? Try the Christmas countdown, pick names with the spin the wheel, or time an activity with the timer.

How the countdown is calculated

Everything is worked out in your browser from your device's clock and time zone. Nothing about you is sent anywhere.

Formulas

  • The visitor's calendar date comes from the clock in their own IANA time zone. The target is the next 1 January or 25 December after that date; on the day itself the page shows the greeting and counts to the following year.

  • Days until is the difference between the two calendar dates, counted with a day-number formula for the Gregorian calendar rather than by subtracting clock times, so daylight-saving changes and leap days cannot skew it.

    days = dayNumber(target) − dayNumber(today)

  • The clock splits the real time left, from now to the first instant of the target date in the visitor's zone, into days of 24 hours, hours, minutes and seconds. That can read one day lower than the calendar count until midnight, because the calendar counts today as a day.

    remaining = midnight(target) − now

  • Weeks and days divide the calendar count by 7. Sleeps are the nights before the holiday morning, which equals the calendar count.

    weeks = ⌊days ÷ 7⌋, rest = days mod 7, sleeps = days

  • Weekdays counts Monday to Friday from today (included) up to the day before the holiday. Public holidays are not removed.

How we test this

This tool is checked against independent formulas every time the site is released, and a release does not ship if a check fails. Example from the test suite: 31 December 2026, 11:30 pm UTC gives 1 day on the calendar, 30 minutes on the clock. The test checks the calendar day count, the year the page names (2027) and the thirty minutes left.

The test is “New Year: Dec 31 counts down to the new year, Jan 1 is the holiday, Jan 2 counts to the year after” in tests/countdown.test.mjs. More on how all tools are tested: our testing approach.

Assumptions and limits

  • It trusts your device's clock and time zone setting. If either is wrong, so is the countdown.
  • Midnight is local: people further east reach the new year earlier, so the countdown shows the moment in your own zone, not a global one.
  • The weekday count does not exclude public holidays or the days your workplace or school is closed.
  • The calendar is the Gregorian one. Other new-year dates (Lunar New Year, Rosh Hashanah, Nowruz) are not modeled.

Helpful answers

Frequently asked questions

How many days until New Year?
There are 62 days until New Year 2027 (Friday, January 1), counting calendar days from today in US Eastern time. Your own count appears in the countdown above, in your time zone.
How long until midnight on New Year's Eve?
The clock above counts the hours, minutes and seconds to midnight at the end of December 31 in your time zone, which is the start of January 1. Midnight reaches the east first, so people in New Zealand see the new year many hours before people in California.
How many sleeps until New Year?
62 sleeps. A sleep is a night, counted from tonight up to the night of December 31, so it equals the number of days until January 1.
How many weekdays until New Year?
44 weekdays (Monday to Friday), counted from today through December 31. Public holidays are not excluded.
What happens after midnight?
On January 1 the countdown shows a Happy New Year message for the whole day in your time zone, and from January 2 it counts down to the next January 1 by itself.
Does the New Year countdown use my time zone?
Yes. After the page loads it reads your device's clock and time zone and counts to midnight at the start of January 1 where you are, and it shows the time zone it used. The number in the headline is worked out for US Eastern time so that it is already in the page when it loads; it switches to your own count as soon as your browser takes over.
Can I put the New Year countdown on my website?
Yes. Copy the embed code from the "Embed this on your site" section: one iframe that you paste into your page. It follows each visitor's time zone, comes in four themes (add ?theme=snow, cozy, minimal or dark to the address), is free, and keeps a small link back to this page.
