When to use this

The check arrives and six people are staring at it. Someone suggests splitting evenly, someone else only had a salad, and nobody can agree on what percentage to tip. This calculator kills the awkwardness in five seconds — enter the bill, pick the tip, set the number of people, done.

It's also useful when you're dining alone and want to double-check the math. Tipping on the pre-tax total vs. post-tax total can make a meaningful difference on a $200 dinner. And delivery app "suggested tips" are often calculated on inflated totals that include fees — it's worth knowing the real number.

Good to know

20% is the new 15%. US tipping norms have shifted. What was considered generous a decade ago is now the baseline for good service at sit-down restaurants. 15% signals dissatisfaction to many servers. 18% is fine, 20% is standard, 25% is generous.

Tip on pre-tax, not post-tax. The tip is for service, not for sales tax. On a $100 meal with 10% tax, tipping 20% on $100 ($20) vs. $110 ($22) is a small difference — but it adds up over a year of dining out.

Delivery tips are separate from service fees. Most delivery apps charge a "service fee" that doesn't go to the driver. The tip is the driver's primary compensation. $3–5 for short deliveries, $5–8+ for longer ones is reasonable.

International tipping varies dramatically. Japan considers tipping rude. Most of Europe includes service in the price (round up or leave 5–10% for exceptional service). Australia doesn't expect tips. The US and Canada are outliers where tips are a major part of server compensation.
